It's been a few weeks since KingCon 2015 took middle Georgia by storm, but the Team Bird Dog ITC Invitational went off with very few hitches. This was our first time running an official ITC event and while we learned things to improve for next year, the biggest issue with 2015 was the army that took first place.
An Ork Nob Bikerz Deathstar army. Took first place. In 2015.
How did THAT happen?
Manning the Black Sunshine Games table with my judge gear.
Out of 10 players, less then we were hoping for of course but just enough for some diversity, only one player brought Orks. The top 4 were Orks, Cult Mechanicus with Knight and Space Marine allies, Tau and Death Korps of Krieg with Armored Company Allies. Playing in the event we had one more Tau player, Necrons, Blood Angels, Chaos Demons with Renegade allies....and two more that I can not think of at the moment. While I was the designated ringer, my Typhus and his Zombie Buddies army (with over 120 Zombie Cultists), never had to hit the table.
The assortment of armies led to some odd moments, such as the Death Korps opponents learning that the Armored Company Vanquishers can take Beast Hunter Shells which are STR 7 blast templates that cause Instant Death. Two of them were enough to ruin the day of one of the Tau players when his poor Stormsurge took many, many wounds on one failed armor save. Mechanicus forces were backed up by a Void Shield Generator, amazingly it was the official model which sold out in what seemed like 5 minutes when it was first released, giving the otherwise frail army a way to withstand lots and lots and lots of shooting. Oh, and a number of players forgot that the Generator counted when it came time to determine control of the objectives. Whoops.
The change that the ITC recently made to the mission order, making kill points the second mission of the day instead of the relic, was a big boost to some armies. The Orks nearly tabled the Tau by the end of turn 3 while the Blood Angels were blown away by the Death Korp of Krieg during the bottom of turn 2. The relic mission then resulted in a down to the wire slap fight between the Tau and Necrons, a game that saw a grand total of 6 models actually leave the table.
Secret Weapon sponsored the event, providing resin bases for every participant and a set of Tablescape Tiles for first place. Second place took home an Imperial Knight kit.
Besides the actual ITC event, Team Bird Dog also accepted the challenge of the Warner-Robins Gamers and threw down in a large-scale game that wasn't Apocalypse but still had teams of 6 with 3,000 points for each player. Team Bird Dog brought a Warhound Titan, a Reaver titan, 3 Baneblades, 6 Imperial Knights and 2 Stormsurges along with a battalion worth of Imperial Guard, some Tau and some Necrons. Team Warner-Robins countered with an Eldar Phantom Titan, the Gargantuan Great Unclean One with a name I can't pronounce if I tried, the Iron Hands Primarch Ferrus Manus, a Fire Raptor, a Harridan (we said Tyranids counted as Allies of Convenience) and many, many Tyranid monstrous creatures. It was a stupid game in all the best ways and the complete opposite of the ITC Event.
Warner Robins on the left, Team Bird Dog on the right.
Carnifex, meet Warhound.
Restless Necrons waiting for their turn.
With both the competitive games and the most relaxed a group game can get without actually involving beer, KingCon 2015 was a big win for Team Bird Dog.
